Mechanic with Tires

Every Bixby driver should know when to rotate tires. Rotating Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

When you rotate tires on your car, truck, or SUV, the rotation is different depending on whether your vehicle is a Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD) or Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD.) Both FWD and RWD direct where the engine power goes, which is why proper tire rotation is crucial.

FWD vs. RWD Engine Power

The engine power of an FWD is sent to the front of the vehicle whereas, an RWD’s engine power is sent to the rear of the car. Thus, the bulk of the vehicle’s power is either on the front tires or on the back tires. Therefore, you need a tire rotation that extends the life of your tires.

FWD vs. RWD Tire Rotation Tips

Here are some tire rotation tips to keep in mind:

  • Whether you own an FWD or RWD car, a tire rotation needs to be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual.
  • A do-it-yourself FWD tire rotation involves flipping sides when moving the rear tires. For example, the rear right tire will go on the front left. However, keep the front tires on the same side when moving them to the back.
  • When rotating tires on an RWD car, rearrange the process of an FWD tire rotation. Flip sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.
  • How and where you drive will affect your tires and may cause more frequent tire rotations. For example, if you drive off-road, or drive a lot, etc.

Why Rotate Tires?

Now that you know how often you should rotate your tires, be sure to rotate your tires as recommended by your owner’s manual first, or every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. The benefits of a tire rotation are:

  • Improved traction and handling
  • Decreases the noise on the road from your tires
  • Reduces unnecessary strain on the drivetrain

To prepare for twists and turns or weather conditions that need you to act fast, be sure to rotate your tires. We want Owasso drivers to stay safe out there.
